Why Should you Choose a Diamond Engagement Ring?

Back in the day, most engagement rings were made of non-diamond material.  Other precious stones, such as sapphires, emeralds and rubies were very popular choices.  While those gemstones are beautiful and colorful, diamonds remain the constant popular and most beloved stone to be the centerpiece of an engagement rings.  So why should you buy a diamond engagement ring?

1. Diamonds are the hardest natural substance. They are a 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness.  (the scale that is used to measure the relative hardness of gemstones.)  Sapphires rank at a 9 on the Mohs scale, and while they are considered a durable and wearable stone as well, the difference in hardness between a 9 and a 10 is actually tenfold!  For a ring that will be worn on a daily basis, you want the most durable stone that money can buy.
2. They reflect a TON of light. While colored gemstones can be faceted like diamonds, the deep color prevents the flash and dispersion of light that a diamond can produce.  You want to buy a ring that will be noticed from across a crowded room.
3. They are available at many different price points. Think you can’t afford to buy a diamond?  Think again.  Since diamonds are graded on a scale according to the 4 Cs, there are a lot of factors that can affect the cost of a particular diamond.  Most diamond and bridal retailers will offer tutorials on how to get the most bang for your buck.  So take a little bit of time to do some research before you buy—you may be surprised to learn what you can afford.
4. They are available in many different shapes. When most people think of diamonds, they probably picture a round brilliant.  While that may be the most popular shape for a diamond by far, keep in mind that diamonds can be cut into almost any shape imaginable.  Princess, oval, marquise, pear and emerald are just a few that may be interesting to look at if you do not want your engagement ring to look like everyone else’s.

As you can see, there are many great reasons to purchase a diamond engagement ring.  The most important thing is to do you research, shop around and have a great time picking out an engagement ring.  This is a memorable purchase, so make sure you are armed with the facts to make your experience as rewarding as possible.  Good luck!
