Gemstone engagement rings have had a bit of a comeback in recent years. For those who want a more distinctive look, or to pair their diamonds with colorful stones, they make an ideal choice. Here are a few of our favorite styles worn by celebrities.
Arguably the most influential engagement ring of recent years, Kate Middleton’s sapphire halo ring is adored by many. Worn previously by Prince William’s late mother, Princess Diana, it has popularized the use of gemstones – and sapphires in particular. 14 solitaire diamonds encircle a 12-carat oval blue Ceylon sapphire, designed by Garrard & Co. Jewelers.
Jacqueline Bouvier’s first engagement ring – from President Kennedy – was very modern for the time. Designed by Van Cleef and Arpels, it featured one 2.8-carat diamond mounted next to a 2.8-carat emerald with tapered baguettes. In 1962, the ring was reset to include round diamonds, totaling .66 carats and marquise diamonds totaling 1.46 carats.
Liz Hurley’s engagement ring, from Australian cricketer Shane Warne, is another sapphire – but with a very different look. A square cut 9-carat blue sapphire flanked by 2-carat trillion cut diamonds, it is a piece that manages to be both modern and vintage inspired. A platinum setting means the ring will endure, and the color will not fade.
Jessica Simpson’s second engagement, to NFL player Eric Johnson, was celebrated with a ruby and diamond ring. A Neil Lane creation, the 5-carat ruby is bordered by two pear-shaped diamonds. It is a very classic style, that still seems unique and stylish.
Javier Bardem proposed to Penelope Cruz with this vintage 3-carat sapphire halo engagement ring. Similar to Kate Middleton’s in style, it makes a stunning alternative to a diamond center-stone, as the halo still provides plenty of sparkle.
While her first engagement was short-lived, Nicole Richie’s engagement ring was perfect for her Valley Girl style at the time. While her fashion tastes have changed remarkably since then, the pink cushion sapphire ring she wore when engaged to DJ AM (Adam Goldstein) was a very distinctive choice.
Newlywed Halle Berry received this stunning engagement ring – from beau Olivier Martinez – last March. An emerald set in yellow gold, it was designed by Robert Mazlo, and definitely sets Halle apart from Hollywood’s usual trend of very large diamonds.
Which is your favorite gemstone engagement ring? Would you consider opting for a sapphire, emerald or ruby instead of a center diamond?
