RINGing in the New Year with Celebrity Engagements – Who will make it down the aisle first?

The most popular gift for celebrity couples this Christmas was definitely the engagement ring, with high-profile couples getting engaged left and right.  After a little under a year of dating, Reece Witherspoon became engaged to her agent boyfriend, Jim Toth.  Toth presented the smitten Witherspoon with a rare and unique 4-carat Ashoka Diamond Engagement Ring set on a pave and platinum band produced by William Goldberg Diamond Corporation.  We can’t wait to see what kind of wedding band she pairs with that stunner!

Also making it official is the controversial couple of LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian.  After meeting on the set of their made for TV movie, Northern Lights, the couple turned in their wedding bands, which ended their marriages, and began dating immediately.  Cibrian presented Rimes with a 5-carat Oval Diamond Engagement Ring, which also features single-cut pave diamonds and small rose-cut diamonds set uniquely in rose gold Fleur-de-Lis designs that attach to the band.  The ring was designed by Cibrian’s childhood friend, the jeweler Brent Polacheck, who received design consultations from both LeAnn and Eddie.

What a year for Natalie Portman?!  First Portman celebrated the opening of the much anticipated movie Black Swan, which showcases her in an award-worthy role.  Now Portman has wedding and baby shower to plan after receiving an engagement ring from New York City Ballet dancer and Black Swan co-star, Benjamin Millepied, AND announcing her pregnancy.  2011 is looking like it’s shaping up to be the year of Portman.  How talented is their child going to be?!

Ideas for Unique Engagement Rings

Every woman wants to have a beautiful engagement ring.  But what if your girlfriend also wants something that is a little bit different than what all of her friends are wearing?  By a mile, the most popular style of engagement ring is probably the solitaire setting.  This type of setting usually features a four or six prong head, and a simple gold or platinum band.  For those of you that like to stand apart from the crowd, there are a lot of different and unique looking engagement rings to consider.

1)    Antique Engagement Rings- Many rings of this style feature really delicate details, such as filigree, beaded edging and pave stone work.  You can find an authentic antique setting by searching estate sales, or get a good reproduction at your local jeweler.
2)    Three Stone Rings- Three stone rings are a nice option because of the symbolism.  The three stones represent your past, present, and future together as a couple.  All three stones can be the same shape or you can mix it up.  The three stone ring is a nice opportunity to get a lot of carat weight spread out over three stones, instead of purchasing one large diamond.
3)    Engagement Rings with Colored Stones – the use of other precious stones in the engagement ring is also creative option for customizing an engagement ring.  Many couples choose to use sapphires as accent stones.  Another option could be to put your intended’s birthstone as an accent stone (if she likes it, of course) or the birthstone of the month in which you plan to marry.
4)    Fancy Colored Diamonds- Although quite pricey, fancy colored diamonds have gained in popularity over the last decade or so.  Some colors readily available on the market are yellow (canary), pink and blue just to name a few.
5)    Pink/ Rose Gold- Pink gold, often marketed as “rose” gold may be something to look into as well.  The pinkish hue is achieved when copper is used as the alloy metal in the gold mixture.  This color can be very flattering on skin tones, and may just provide that “wow” factor that you are looking for.
