Fashion Recap of the MTV VMA Awards

The MTV Video Music Awards always pack a punch when it comes to over the top performances and usually a lot of surprises, whether it be impromptu collaborations or the off the wall fashion choices of the many stars in attendance.  Last night’s show definitely didn’t disappoint.  First off, MTV chose not to have a steady host throughout the broadcast, which was a first for the network.  Lady Gaga’s alter ego, Jo Caldarone, opened the show with an unusual monologue about the singer before launching into a performance of her latest single, “You and I.”  Another surprise of the evening happened when Beyoncé opened her jacket after her performance to reveal to the audience that she and husband, rapper Jay Z, were expecting their first child with a definitely noticeable baby bump.  Hopefully she told Jay Z about this before showing it essentially to the world.

Enough about the unexpected surprises of the night and onto the fashion.  Any MTV awards show are great to watch because one can never guess what the stars will be wearing.  Rarely do they play it safe when venturing onto the MTV red carpet, so it’s always a treat to see what boundaries that they have pushed.  One trend that can always be seen on the ladies is the short mini cocktail dress.  One star rocking the short mini was Britney Spears, who wore a black sequined frock by Moschino that she paired with simple jewels, which included a diamond pendant necklace.  Also opting for something short was actress Zoe Saldana who wore a beaded plunging mini dress by Barbara Bui that she paired with a pair of metallic cuff bracelets.

Another trend of the evening, as is always the case with MTV, was individuality.  British import, Adele, chose a geometric patterned black dress by Burberry that she paired with Harry Winston platinum earrings and a bouffant.  The usually upbeat Selena Gomez channeled her inner Goth by choosing an asymmetrical black Julien McDonald dress with black lace cutouts.  She finished her look with a pair of Brian Atwood pumps, a pair of drop earrings and a gold cuff bracelet.  Mom-to-be, Beyoncé, was simply glowing in a one-shoulder orange Lanvin gown that she paired with dramatic Lorraine Schwartz earrings, a show-stopping bracelet and her diamond engagement ring.  Starlette Miley Cyrus chose a multi print figure hugging dress that she finished with a pair of drop earrings and a metallic choker necklace.  With such a great pairing of music and fashion, it’s a shame that MTV doesn’t have awards shows more often.

And the Golden Popcorn Goes To…

With the Cannes Film Festival but a distant memory, it’s a great treat to have the MTV Movie Awards to keep the style flowing.  The awards are always fun to watch, as the stars are always unpredictable and dressed to the nines.  This year’s show definitely didn’t disappoint with a heavy emphasis on short and sexy to celebrate the summer.

Ever the style icon, Reese Witherspoon looked stunning in Zac Posen leopard print mini dress to pick up her MTV Generation award.  The Water for Elephants starlette finished her look with a pair of nude platform heels, a gold bangle bracelet, a pair of diamond stud earrings and of course her diamond engagement ring. Blake Lively looked fresh from her European vacation with new beau, Leonardo DiCaprio, in a figure hugging Michael Kors cobalt blue dress and eggplant Christian Louboutin heels.  To complete her look, Livley chose a stack of sparkling bangles to add that extra little style.  With the last installment of the Harry Potter films premiering next month, actress Emma Watson chose a fun and flirty Marchesa white mini dress and silver Brian Atwood pumps.   Adding to her shimmering look was a simple diamond bangle bracelet, a pair of delicate drop earrings and a diamond ring.

After meeting the Biebers in Canada, Selena Gomez was beaming with the look of love.  Gomez chose a printed floral top and a fitted skirt by Giambattista Valli mini skirt to complete her look.  Completing her look was the pair of gold hoop drop earrings.  The always stylish Leighton Meester went with the philosophy that all that glitters in her metallic Balmain mini dress, Pierre Hardy sandals and Bulgari earrings and ring.  Also choosing to go with a metallic frock was Mrs. Andy Roddick, Brooklyn Decker, who donned a No. 21 gold sparkling dress that she paired with a pair of black Walter Steiger pumps.  Finishing her look was the House of Lavande ring and of course her engagement ring.  Also sporting a new diamond engagement ring was Twilight actress, Nikki Reed, who wore a sheer black halter gown with metallic clutch.  Reed has now begun planning to exchange vows and wedding bands with her boyfriend of only a few months, American Idol alum Paul McDonald.  Will art imitate life with her costar, Kristen Stewart accepting an engagement ring proposal from boyfriend, Robert Pattinson, with the coy couple walking down the aisle soon as well?

Everything’s Better on the French Riviera – A Recap of the Cannes Film Festival

With awards season well behind us in the States, it’s nice to have the Cannes Film Festival to pull us out of the winter doldrums.  Cannes is essentially the official “kick-off” to awards season, as many of the Oscar frontrunners are first debuted at during the week long festivities.  Along with numerous movie premiers, there are plenty of formal fêtes and fashion shows to keep everyone busy during their stay.  The event brings out many of Hollywood’s elite, international socialites, and fashionistas alike who are all adorning the latest in fashion trends that look amazing next to the gorgeous Riviera backdrop.

One of the big events of the week is the amfAR gala that always proves to be one of the most start studded events of the week.  One star who made sure she was dressed to impress was Freida Pinto, who was accompanied by her boyfriend, Dev Patel.  Pinto was dressed to the nines in a black sequins Lanvin dress and Chopard diamond drop earrings.  Although there was no visible engagement ring on her finger, the couple had to yet again deny the wedding rumors.  Also showcasing her undeniable style at the gala was Festival Juror, Uma Thurman, who chose a figure hugging, Chanel Haute Couture grey gown paired with a pair of simple Chopard drop earrings.  Victoria’s Secret model, Alessandra Ambrosio chose a detailed Robert Cavalli gown that matched the color of the water along the famous French coast.  Beautifully accenting her gown was the dramatic pair of drop earrings and matching bangle bracelets that helped solidify her status as one of the runway’s elite.

Since the purpose of the festival is to showcase films for the upcoming year, movie premieres are the main attraction and seem to be more like fashion shows than movie viewings.  Milla Jovovich channeled the 1940s with her Prada red and white polo style gown for The Conquest premiere.  Since she is the new face of Jacob & Co., she was sure to pair her frock with a pair of Jacob & Co. drop earrings and a Jacob & Co. watch.  Also seen on the model turned actress was her wedding band from husband Paul W.S. Anderson.  Kirsten Dunst looked anything but melancholy at the premiere of her new film, Melancholia.  The actress chose a black and emerald green textured, Rodarte halter gown for the occasion, which she paired with a Bulgari cuff bracelet and pair of Bulgari drop earrings.  Newly single, Bar Rafaeli flaunted her newly single status with a figure forming Robert Cavalli gown and Chopard diamond ring and pair of Chopard diamond drop earrings at the premiere of The Beaver.  With the end of such a magical festival, we now have a number of great movies to look forward to as well as another great season of award shows.

The Bold and Beautiful: 2011 Met Gala Filled with Glamorous Dresses and Eye Catching Jewelry

Courtesy of modish-blog.blogspot.com

With The Golden Globes and Oscars but a mere distant memory, it was time to get dressed up and put on the dancing shoes for just one more event.  The Costume Institute’s Met Gala has long been considered the event of the year, bringing out Hollywood’s elite, fashion industry elite, socialites, journalists and even politicians along, of course, with the world’s most recognized fashion designers. Last night’s Costume Institute’s Met Gala was a great celebration of the life and work of the late designer, Alexander McQueen.  The star studded event helped bring more color and life to the already spring setting in NYC.

One of the trends that were seen at last night’s soiree was neutral toned dresses.  Ever the fashionista, Sarah Jessica Parker paid tribute to her close friend, McQueen, with a high necked glittering dress that she paired with Fred Leighton drop earrings and green pumps.  Actress Ashley Greene traded in her vampire digs for a Donna Karan blush tulle gown complete with mermaid train.  Greene chose to finish her look with a dramatic pair of Lorraine Schwartz diamond earrings and a diamond cuff bracelet.  The always stunning Gwyneth Paltrow supported friend, Stella McCartney with a figure hugging nude long sleeved crystal embellished gown.  As she didn’t have enough sparkle, Paltrow completed her look with a pair of Fred Leighton earrings and of course her diamond engagement ring.

Since the Met Gala is considered the Super Bowl of fashion events, one of the other trends that is typically seen is over the top, out of the box designs gracing the red carpet and last night didn’t disappoint.  Singer Beyonce wore a figure hugging black and gold embellished Emilio Pucci gown that she paired with a pair of Lorraine Schwartz earrings.  I guess her engagement ring and wedding band from husband, Jay Z didn’t quite match her outfit.  Demi Moore was fit to be a guest of the royal wedding with her black feathered Prabal Gurung gown complete with Philip Treacy matching hat.  Completing her look was the eye catching pair of Cartier diamond drop earrings.  Ever the material girl, Madonna was dripping in Cartier, a diamond necklace, a pair of diamond drop earrings, diamond ring and plethora diamond bracelets to be exact, which she paired with a sleek aqua Stella McCartney gown.  The Met Gala was a great tribute to a legendary designer and a great way to kick off the spring season.  It’s hard to believe that we now need to wait until awards season kicks off again for another over the top fashion event!

Angelina Jolie – Actress, Humanitarian and Jewelry Designer?

Actress Angelina Jolie is known for many things, her talented career, her unyielding work as an UN Ambassador and also her impeccable style.  Jolie is often seen on the Best Dressed lists throughout awards season, with her bold fashion and jewelry choices that are usually at the forefront of the current trends.  This year was no exception with her arriving to the Golden Globes in a glittery green, long sleeved Atelier Versace gown.  Jolie chose to accent her frock with a pair of Robert Procop emerald drop earrings and Robert Procop cocktail ring.

Although the pair has been collaborating on pieces for years, Jolie has paired up with jeweler Procop, of Robert Procop Exceptional Jewels, to create a jewelry line to benefit her charity Education Partnership for Children of Conflict.  The pair has spent the past year collaborating on the line, which features a series of one-of-a-kind pieces to be sold by invitation only.  Many of the earrings, rings and necklaces from the collection, aptly named Style of Jolie, feature unique stones, such as beryl, cut into cushion and pear shaped styles.  The pieces also showcase the actress’s personal style as she has worn some of the pieces to red carpet events, such as the rose gold and black stone necklace that she wore to the Berlin premiere of Salt over the summer.  Also featured in the collection is a vintage diamond choker necklace, which can also be seen on display at the Julien’s Gallery and Auction House in Beverly Hills, was featured in her most recent film, The Tourist.  Creating stylishly classic jewelry for a great cause, Angelina Jolie is truly saving the world one diamond ring and bracelet at a time.

Just in Time for Spring, a little Celebrity Wedding Band Bling!

With Spring in the air, what better time to celebrate a celebrity wedding?!  The much anticipated nuptials of Reese Witherspoon and her CAA agent fiancé went off without a hitch on March 26th at the actress’ Ojai, CA ranch.  Being her second time down the aisle, Witherspoon was thinking pink when she chose a custom Monique Lhuillier gown to celebrate the occasion.  Daughter Ava, from her previous marriage to Ryan Philippe, served as the Maid of Honor also wearing a Monique Lhuillier dress.  Son Deacon, also from her first marriage, served as the Ring Bearer who had the important job of carrying the couple’s wedding bands from the William Goldberg Diamond Corporation.  To accompany her stunning 4-carat diamond engagement ring, Witherspoon now has a large pave diamond wedding band to add to her collection.  With her acting career in full force and his client list with CAA, they are definitely a Hollywood couple that is a force to be reckoned with.

Seems like Michael Bublé is going to need to change the lyrics to his song, “Haven’t Met You Yet, as the Canadian singer took a trip down the aisle not once but twice last week when he married his girlfriend, actress Luisana Lopilato in her native Argentina.  Argentina has special meaning for the couple, as Bublé presented Lopilato a diamond engagement ring in front of her family there back in 2009.  After Thursday’s civil wedding ceremony, the couple exchanged wedding bands a second time on Saturday in front of 300 of their closest friends and family.  Believe it or not, but the couple is even planning a third wedding ceremony in May for Bublé’s family in Vancouver.  I wonder if they will buy each other three separate anniversary bands to celebrate each event?!

Also tying the knot over the weekend was former Alias star, Michael Vartan who married his girlfriend of the past two years, Lauren Skaar.  Unlike most Hollywood couples, Vartan and Skaar met while shopping at Whole Foods in LA.  The actor presented his blushing bride with a diamond engagement ring during a trip to New York last year.  The couple exchanged vows and wedding bands in front of friends and family at The Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Beach, CA.  The bride wore a Vera Wang dress that she customized herself at her own bridal shop, L’atelier Couture in MN and the groom of course wore a signature Giorgio Armani tux.  Among those in attendance was Vartan’s former costar, Victor Garber, who served as a groomsman.  What better way to kick of Spring than with a California beach side wedding?!

Elizabeth Taylor’s Jewelry Collection is the Latest to Appear on the Auction Block

Actress Elizabeth Taylor was known for many things; her successful acting career, her many high profile marriages, her philanthropic work especially relating to AIDS and of course, her larger than life jewelry collection.  Upon her passing last week, there has been much speculation as to what would become of the iconic pieces and today it seems that the glamorous collection will soon be seen on the auction block at Christie’s.  The collection, which has been estimated at $150 million, showcases Taylor’s long penchant for colored stones and of course her love of diamonds.  With her own jewelry line, which was aptly titled House of Taylor, the actress was able to create many pieces that showcased her love for all things sparkly.  Some of the staple pieces that stood out in her own collection were the 69-carat pear shaped diamond necklace, which quickly became named the Taylor Burton diamond, the 33-carat Krupp Asscher-cut diamond ring and the diamond tiara that she fashionably wore to the Academy Awards.

Taylor’s wasn’t the only famous actress with a high profile jewelry collection.  Screen legend, Gloria Swanson, who was known as the highest paid actress in Hollywood during the 1920s, is having her infamous 5.1 carat diamond ring auctioned off at the Christie’s Paris May 23rd auction.  It was often speculated that Swanson’s annual jewelry budget ranged upwards of $500,000.  Before Swanson’s famous diamond ring takes center stage, Christie’s New York is having their annual Magnificent Jewels auction on April 12th that will feature some remarkable, one-of-a-kind pieces.  One such item is the 10 carat cushion-cut purple pink diamond ring, which is estimated to sell between $12 – $15 million, that is set in 18-karat rose gold and platinum and is flanked by two cushion-cut diamonds.  Also featured is a vintage Cartier diamond and onyx bracelet that represents the Art Deco era.  Since the trend of is “going green” has taken over the world of jewelry, the auction will also feature a suite of diamond and emerald Van Cleef & Arpels baubles, including a pair of diamond and emerald earrings, a diamond and emerald pendant brooch and a diamond and emerald necklace.

With such great auctions scheduled over the next few months, there is a great deal of fabulous jewels for sale.  Will you channel your inner Elizabeth Taylor or Gloria Swanson and partake in purchasing some great pieces for your collection?

The Celebrity Stamp of Approval: Jewelers Using Star Power in Their Advertising

What better way to get a brand noticed than to showcase a celebrity in the advertising?!  Celebrity endorsements are nothing new to the world of marketing and advertising for both big and small brands.  Many feel that once a celebrity is seen marketing or endorsing a specific brand or product that crowds will automatically flock to the stores to buy whatever it is they are selling.  Celebrity endorsements have become so common that it makes it almost impossible to flip through any magazine without seeing a famous face in a brand’s advertising campaign.  Some celebrities can be seeing endorsing multiple brands as long as they don’t sell the same types of products or services.

Although the world of sports and fashion typically lead the pack when it comes to celebrity endorsements, the jewelry and watch industry has long had a history of using celebrities to sell their goods.  During awards season, there is often a great controversy as to some jewelry brands even paying celebrities to be seen wearing their jewels on the red carpet.  However, most brands go the more traditional route and feature the celebrities in their advertising campaigns.  David Yurman has often been at the forefront of celebrity endorsements as they continuously feature similar looking celebrities, such as Kate Moss, Amber Valletta and Naomi Watts dripping in the brand’s earrings, bracelets, rings and necklaces in their advertisements.

Since the start of 2011 we have seen several brands jumping on the band wagon of using famous faces in their campaigns.  The popular Danish model, Freja Beha Erichsen is featured in two 2011 jewelry campaigns for both Georg Jensen and Harry Winston.  In both campaigns, Erichsen is featured decked out the in the glamorous earrings, necklaces, rings and bracelets of the famous brands.  Kirsten Dunst has recently been named the new face of the Bvlgari Mon Jasmin Noir perfume.  Although the ads are promoting the perfume, Bvlgari was smart to have Dunst wearing little else except the fragrance and some of their popular jewelry pieces, such as the B.Zero rings, as well as other bold and dramatic necklaces and rings.  After the success of their collaboration with shoe designer, Manolo Blahnik, the jewelry brand TOUS, named new American Idol Judge as the brand’s 2011 spokesperson.  Tous is famous for creating gorgeous bracelets, earrings and necklaces that showcase unique charm pendants.  Mad Men bombshell, Christina Hendricks, was named the new face for the new jewelry line from Vivienne Westwood for Palladium called “Get a Life.”  The collection features both couture and retail necklaces, bracelets and earrings that are all set within the white precious metal.  No matter what the product, there is usually a celebrity out there endorsing it.

William and Kate: The Official Royal Wedding Website

Courtesy of REUTERS/Copyright 2010 Mario Testino

When Prince William stood with his bride to be, Kate Middelton, and announced their engagement, the world went aflutter.  William revealed that he proposed with his mother’s diamond and sapphire engagement ring and immediately jewelers all over the world were asked to make replicas.  All eyes became fixated on England wondering when the Royal Wedding was going to take place.  Speculation started swirling about who the ever fashionable Kate would be seen wearing on such a special day.  Since the couple is young and very much interested in updating the look and feel of the monarchy, it was no surprise that they like most couples have released their own Royal Wedding Website.

Unlike most couple’s wedding websites where the primary focus is on specific details for guests attending the wedding and reception, William and Kate are welcoming the whole world to participate in their special day.  The ceremony will take place on the morning of Friday April 29, 2011 at the famous, Westminster Abbey.  The Royal Procession will transport the couple to the reception held by the Queen at Buckingham Palace.  The couple have announced their Bridal Party, which is totaling eight including Prince William’s godchildren.  With the Royal invitations stating that the attire for the gentleman attending the wedding as “uniforms, morning coats or lounge suits,” and that women are required to wear the traditional accessory, the hat, it’s promising to be one of the most fashionable events of the year.

With questions still looming about who will design Kate’s wedding dress, what the wedding bands will look like and what the bridal party will be seen wearing, the Royal Wedding Website is definitely the place to find out all of the information firsthand.  Let the countdown to the Royal Wedding begin!
